How rifts spawn
Checked 21 October 2026: rift.js in repository 3c9641c9e7, official build d2dfaee739. Timings describe source logic, not an observed spawn schedule.

Rifts do not appear at exactly 75 seconds. The code first requires time > 75, then counts down a 30-second check timer, making the first ordinary attempt around 1:45. Attempts have chances of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% after consecutive misses. A living boss skips an attempt; an existing portal or arena suspends checks, and placing a portal can fail if no free spot is found. Therefore the five-attempt rule is not a guaranteed wall-clock spawn interval.
- 18 arenas, one per type, with distinct terrain and weather. An unopened portal lasts 45 seconds; the arena fight has a separate 120-second limit.
- An ordinary victory pays tickets and coins and gives each player a bond; the changelog states a ×10 ticket drops about half the time. A normal defeated legendary is not automatically added to the collection.
- The chosen legendary has a 1/512 shiny roll when a shiny sprite exists. Defeating a shiny grants that Pokémon, including the normal version if missing. This is distinct from the 1/4096 wild rate and 1/100 gacha roll.
- No new rift opens from 28:00 onward.
- A loss or timeout returns the team without the victory reward; it is not a run-ending boss capture. GDD.md’s older 14% figure does not match this snapshot’s rift.js.
Questions
Why won’t a rift spawn?
The first ordinary attempt is around 1:45, not exactly 1:15. Living bosses skip attempts and an existing portal or arena suspends checks. No new portal opens from 28:00 onward; valid failed attempts increase the next chance.
